afugazi // quadrature ir

one sub in. an o on the scope out.
the right side runs 90 degrees behind the left at every frequency, 20 hz to 20 khz.
both sides stay flat. in mono nothing cancels, the sub just sits about 3 db lower.

  AFUGAZI Quadrature IR tight 44.1k / 48k / 88.2k / 96k
the sub lands about 1.4 ms sooner. 90 degrees from 50 hz up,
narrower below (about 67 degrees at 20 hz).

pick the rate that matches your project.

how to use it
  1. put it on a pure sub or 808 layer. not the kick, not the whole beat.
high-pass the 808 at about 20 hz first: anything under 20 hz stays mono.
  2. load it in any convolution reverb. 100% wet, no dry.
no pre-delay, no stretch, no decay envelope, no eq, no normalise.
  3. check the goniometer. the straight line should open into an o.
(a full 808 draws loops, not a clean o: check that correlation sits
around 0 and that the sub drops about 3 db in mono.)
  4. hit mono. the sub should drop about 3 db, not disappear.
  5. no saturation after it.
saturate before it if you want, but leave headroom:
a driven 808 comes out up to about 7 db hotter on the peaks.

timing
the sub lands about 6 ms after the click (tight: about 4.5 ms).
if the 808 has to hit with the kick, nudge the layer that much earlier.
